Sudan is the last northern white rhinos left, currently living in Kenya. He is a living monument, a sculpture interrogated with the idea of creating the vivid memory of this living species, conceived and designed as a visual poem.
Sudan’s body speaks to us, calling into question the definition of nature, it is a living analysis of the idea of future, memory and force us into different time scale. The film is a perfect image of a combination of vulnerability and strength. Sudan, as the last the last male of his species, represent an uncanny encounter, a profoundly decentering act that highlights the fragility of the earth and the beings that comprise it, and pushes us into acknowledging our interconnectedness with all other beings means remaining uncertain about what we are. Sudan is shooted and settled in Ol Pejeta conservancy, where Sudan lives protected night and day by armed guards, and unfolds the daily gestures and activities of the living creatures that interact with each other in this suspended reality
Northern white rhinos' horns, and their byproduct, Anger Dust, are more valuable than gold powder, diamond power and angel dust.
Sudan is the the last living white northern rhino, he’s the last mohican of a sub-species slaughtered on the altar of ignorance and beliefs: the impotence which the Anger Dust is believed to cure has injected impotence into the tubes and flutes of a generation.
The film is an interview with the body of Sudan: a living monument, a sculpture interrogated with the idea of creating the vivid memory of this living species, conceived and designed as a visual poem.
Rhino image has been cast by western european visual art, it’s a story made out of stereotypes, misunderstanding and mistakes, that’s why a printed version of Albrecht Durer and Pietro Longhi rhino based paintings is put into dialogue with Sudan.
Both of them cast our perception of the rhino, of nature, of reality. Images of reality substituted reality itself.
The short film creates the last memory of this living species with a poetic approach, gambling with obsolescence and death.
