Anita Beckers selection of videos for Independent Collector

In an exclusive interview with IC she talks about the technological progress that keeps reinventing the genre and her different roles she faces as a collector, gallerist and curator.

Artemovendo – in collaboration with Goethe Institut Porto Alegre

The video works shown in Artemovendo present a morphology of ambiguous entities, creatures or technical devices. Natural environments are contrasted with artificial, fully computer-designed worlds. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish whether we have been invited to take a look at the outside world or into a laboratory; even dimensions appear to be chosen arbitrarily. Or do we happen to be entering a microscopically small universe that has been magnified many times over?

Chance, Observation and a Poetics of the Personal

A series of pieces which deal with chance and observation of the every day; that which in our perception is hidden unless we slow down and take a closer look.

The Düsseldorf based foundation imai – inter media art institute was founded in 2006 in order to establish an institution in Germany dedicated to the distribution and preservation of media art and associated activities.

KINO DER KUNST 2013

Works

What can art gain from cinema? And how can cinema contribute to art?

From April 24 to 28, 2013 Munich will host KINO DER KUNST, the first event of its kind worldwide to present films by visual artists who take cinema beyond its traditional boundaries and explore new narrative forms. KINO DER KUNST is designed to be an exhibition and a film festival in one, creating a showcase for today’s trends in art and an international meeting point for artists, curators and the public. Spread across various locations, such as the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF), the Pinakothek der Moderne / Schaustelle, the Museum Brandhorst in the Kunstareal and beyond that the ARRI cinema, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Kunstverein Munich, the MaximliansForum, the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the Goetz Collection, it will feature a competition with generous prizes, a retrospective program of feature-length films by artists ranging from Rebecca Horn and Eija-Liisa Ahtila to Steve McQueen or Julian Schnabel, a wide range of works from specific geographical regions and a number of museum-based multi-channel installations, all aimed at examining the current relationship between cinema and art. The quest of contemporary artists for a globally comprehensible language of the moving image is playing an increasingly important role here – will the cinema of the future find its home in the museum?

The jury of the International Competition, which in addition to Amira Casar will include artists Cindy Sherman and Isaac Julien as well as Defne Ayas, Director of Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, will present two KINO DER KUNST Main Awards, each with a value of 10,000 Euro and donated by the Goetz Collection and BMW. The price donated by BMW goes to an artist under the age of 35.

The comprehensive retrospective is dedicated to Isaac Julien and will screen his feature films, multi-channel pieces and feature-length documentaries, such as “Derek”, his tribute to the deceased art and film pioneer Derek Jarman. A region-specific exhibition will showcase artists’ films from Asia. There will also be artist talks, projections and a public pitch for the KINO DER KUNST Project Award (10,000 Euro, donated by ARRI Film & TV Services GmbH) aimed at European artists and filmmakers under 35 and their projects, an Award for the Filmic Œevre, also with a value of 10,000 Euro and donated by Louis Vuitton. The Biehler von Dorrer Stiftung offers an Audience Award with a prize money of 5,000 Euro.

According to Bernardo Bertolucci, cinema time is not real time like the lapsing of seconds in our everyday reality; it is dream time. Will art be able to transport this dream time into the museum?
