ACCUMULATIONS
a themed video art axhibition curated by Sabin Bors
ACCUMULATIONS was first installed in the context of the project VIDEO WINDOW of the gallery Sherin Najjar. The exhibition, curated by Sabin Bors shows a thoughtful selection of video works by Lars Buchardt, Christoph Draeger, Mihai Grecu, Kurt Hentschlager, Michael Najjar, Quayola and Reynold Reynolds.
Accumulation refers to a state of tension, fissure and transition across various levels of time. Working with cinematography, 3D-Mapping and projections, video compositions and collages, our artists seek to discuss various different representations to question the very construction of narratives today, in a time when the image turns into motion.
REYNOLD REYNOLDS (born in Alaska in 1966) uses the medium of film as an instrument of measurement. Basing his pictures on movement, sequence and the elapse of individual images, he uses a special stop-motion technique to capture them on 16mm film. Assuming the consistency of time and place and their influence on our perception, his highly experimental work Secret Machine transposes this concept into a symbol-laden configuration of change and transience. In his latest video piece spacewalk, MICHAEL NAJJAR (born in Germany in 1966) explores the relationship between space, gravity and the human body. As part of his preparations for his impending journey into space, set for 2014, the artist plunges into a water tank, sinking slowly to the bottom. The sudden appearance of a far-off view of the Earth calls into question the location of the astronaut. The unusual visual experience presented by the video piece in Schizo (Redux) from CHRISTOPH DRAEGER (born in Switzerland in 1965) involves superimposition of the Hitchcock film classic Psycho on Gus Van Sant’s remake. Forming a psychological ghost image, the result has the appearance of a 3D film: the “psychos” are transformed into “schizos.” The compositions of KURT HENTSCHLAGER (born in Austria in 1960) Sector 2c, MIHAI GRECU (born in Rumania in 1981) Centipede Sun and LARS BUCHARDT (born in Denmark in 1964) The Synthetic Quality, present multi-layered constructions of nature and space. These treatments of nature and its quality culminates in QUAYOLA‘s (born in Italy in 1982) imaginary geology Strata #2, in which he fragments the window of a gothic Cathedral, layer by layer, into individual picture sections.
The series of contractions, superimpositions, breaks, new compositions, hybridizations and collages showcased in this exhibition generates an atmosphere of continual transition and change. From this perspective, every space and body leads a unique existence: any notion of standard existence is rejected for the cumulative possibilities provided by multiple transitions.
