Videoart at High Noon
Critics‘ Pick by Nicole Büsing and Heiko Klaas

Cologne/Brussels. How can video art be presented in a suitable way? While on “blinkvideo” you can enjoy watching video art comfortably from your couch, at your desk or on a train, viewing videos at art fairs often turns out to be quite a challenge. To concentrate on a work of moving pictures in the bustling atmosphere of an art fair requires maximum attention. And yet, this year’s Art Cologne and the simultaneous Art Brussels once more featured a number of intriguing video works, some of which we would like to present you here.

Christoph Faulhaber: Revolution & Architecture

Kunsthalle Osnabrück / June 15 to October 2, 2018
With "Revolution & Architecture" Christoph Faulhaber (* 1972 in Osnabrück, lives in Hamburg) conceives, builds, designs and opens a whole series of very different rooms in the Kunsthalle Osnabrück. In order to discover the revolutionary aspect of these "architectures", one has to look at the social implications of interior design in general. In the forum the visitor then enters Faulhaber's cinematic autobiography "Every Picture is an Empty Picture" as in the eye of the cyclone: The work is split into 15 individual films and surrounds the visitor in a circle.

European Media Art Festival 2018

The various sections of the festival dealt primarily with one theme: the link between media art and journalism – under the heading “Report – Notes from Reality.” It was all about facebook data theft, interference in elections by secret services, the threat of trade war, and dubious arms exports.

Johan Grimonprez

Johan Grimonprez’s critically acclaimed work dances on the borders of practice and theory, art and cinema, documentary and fiction, demanding a double take on the part of the viewer. Informed by an archeology of present-day media, his work seeks out the tension between the intimate and the bigger picture of globalization. It questions our contemporary sublime, one framed by a fear industry that has infected political and social dialogue. By suggesting new narratives through which to tell a story, his work emphasizes a multiplicity of realities.

Breaking News
Von Kelterborn Collection

Over the past 20 years, the Frankfurt couple Mario and Julia von Kelterborn have put together a collection mostly of politically explosive, socially themed video art and photography by internationally known artists. It is their conviction that art can help us to understand the present day with all its complexity, contradictions and disturbing cruelty, but also its positive potential.

Stiftung imai – inter media art institute

The Düsseldorf based foundation imai – inter media art institute was founded in 2006 in order to establish an institution in Germany dedicated to the distribution and preservation of media art and associated activities.

Artemovendo – in collaboration with Goethe Institut Porto Alegre

The video works shown in Artemovendo present a morphology of ambiguous entities, creatures or technical devices. Natural environments are contrasted with artificial, fully computer-designed worlds. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish whether we have been invited to take a look at the outside world or into a laboratory; even dimensions appear to be chosen arbitrarily. Or do we happen to be entering a microscopically small universe that has been magnified many times over?

Anna Gaskell. Hide and Seek

Curated by Nadia Ismail

The Kunsthalle Gießen is pleased to present the first institutional solo-exhibition in Germany by the New York based artist Anna Gaskell (*1969 Des Moines/Iowa). The exhibition focuses on photographic and time-based works which have largely characterised the American artists Œuvre since 1996.

LICHTER ART AWARD 2013
Works of this yearʻs finalists artists and the winner

Works

The LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International has been celebrating local and international filmmaking since its very early days of 2008. Besides a competition in the categories short and feature film the festival presents a qualitative program on contemporary video art.

In the year 2010 Saul Judd curated an exhibition especially for the festival titled "stimulus kino" - "subliminal cinema" which focused in the use of cinematic references as tool in contemporary art. Two of the invited artists were Mike Bouchet, international artist from New York based in Frankfurt and Keren Cytter also an well known international artist from Israel based in Berlin/New York. Both for mentioned artists were present at the 53th Venice Biennale in 2009.

In the year 2011 LICHTER decide to create a competition called LICHTER Art Award. And since that it has produced three very successful editions; where brilliant video works from artists like Luciana Lamothe (AR), 2011 winner, Oliver Husain (D/C), 2012 and John Skoog (S/D) 2013 winner were reworded. The prize is 1000 Euros and a Benbel a traditional Apple wine Pitcher from Hessen (the region in Germany where Frankfurt is located).

The LICHTER Art Award is an international competition and curated exhibition aiming to present the most up to date, diversified and qualitative artistic works in the contemporary field of visual arts. Accepted are works which uses film and video as a primary media. The competition is open to all visual artists and film directors, art and film academies students.

More than 60 artists and filmmakers from all over the world applied for this yearʼs LICHTER Art Award. Once again the entries were very diversified. Everything featured, from works of Sci-Fi Romance to investigative stories to complex installation works. The jury composed of Karola Gramann (curator at the Kinothek Asta Nielsen), Peter Gorschlüter (curator at the MMK, Museum für Moderne Kunst) and Saul Judd (curator of LICHTER Art Award) selected the five finalists. The winner of this yearʻs competition is Bertrand Flanet with the work 'Unmanned Distances'.

All the works will be exhibited at the LICHTER festival center during the 7th LICHTER Filmfest Frankfurt International from 25th to 30th of March 2014 in Frankfurt, Germany. LICHTER is very pleased to collaborate with blinkvideo.de were we will present an LICHTER Art Award online version of the show featuring the works of this yearʻs finalists artists and the winner:

'Louve', 2013 by Clémentine Coupau (F)
'Unmanned Distances', 2013 by Bertrand Flanet (F)
'Fuckmeadows', 2013 by Andrew de Freitas (NZ)
'Drinking Tea In Russia', 2013 by Murray Gaylard (ZA/D)
'Ano Branco', 2013 by Luiz Roque (BR)

Although only in its 4th year, the LICHTER Art Award is already a respected prize and exhibition. It attracts submissions from artists who have already work included in museum collections, such as Murray Gaylard. Others have participated in international film festivals like Luiz Roque whose work 'Ano Branco' has its
premiere at the Biennial do Mercosul last year. The selection of the jury will always play a major role in maintaining the quality of the contest. We were honoured to have had Simon Starling, a Turner Prize winner, and Judith Hopf, an internationally known artist and teacher at the Städelschule, as members of the jury in the past.

We wish the blinkvideo audience great moments with the LICHTER Art Award 2014 online show.

About the video

Her video installation 'LOUVE', 2013, is a journey between territories that we can call home and away, set in places like Frankfurt and places that could only exist in our imagination. Coupau works with different disciplines involving sculpture, installation and video. She recently graduated from the Städelschule, Frankfurt.

" The wolf began to wander, moving towards the cities. He never really ventured into the center or into residential areas, defining his territory in a very fragmentary way. He was seen on construction sites, between piles of tar and piles of fresh earth. Sneaking in-between scaffolding [...] He also delighted in wastelands, dashing across the cracked tar, breathing in the scent of the wild lilac. He became a part of a «Pioneer» eco-system, colonizing these interstitial spaces."
